CHORUS
(Mutters with difficulty) Miss Nightingale... Ma’am.
Yes?
(FLO walks towards him) Don’t come too close.
Why do you say that?
I feel so sick... and dirty. My own mother couldn’t touch me. And I’ve got this terrible pain... ‘ere... down ‘ere in my side.
Lift your head and I will try to make you a little more comfortable.
(FLO gently moves the soldier)
Thank you ma’am. Thass better... dun ‘urt quite so much now. In my bag you’ll find a letter. You couldn’t take it to my wife could you?
(FLO finds the letter in the bag) Of course. I will see she gets it. That’s a promise.
Tis a comfort... knowin’ that you’ll come and see us... regular, like.
Try not to speak, you really must get some rest.
But I can’t stop thinkin’ ‘bout the war... me wife... n’ the children. ‘ow them are fairin’, ‘n’ that.
Try to get some sleep.
(Muttering almost inaudibly) Yes... sleep... sleep.
Miss Nightingale... (FLO walks over) I bin awake most of the night... worried sick. Can I ‘ave a word?
You should be resting or we‘ll never get you well.
The doctor said the same thing. Then I saw ‘im standin’ with some others in a huddle in the corner over there. (Start intro to ‘Song 14: Don’t Lose Heart’ here) Whisperin’ they was... and pointin’ directly at me.
That’s nothing unusual... they’re more than likely discussing your medication.
(With an air of panic) But I’ve seen it before... Pointin’ at other soldiers in the same way. I know what it means. I might as well finish it now... while I can. Can’t you give me sometin’ that’ll send me to sleep for a very long time?
You mustn’t talk in this way. There is always hope...
DON’T LOSE HEART
IT’S EASY TO BE PESSIMISTIC
WHEN YOU’RE UP AGAINST THE WALL
IT’S EASIER TO TURN ROUND AND RUN THAN TO
STAY AND FACE IT ALL
BUT I CAN RECOMMEND
A PHILOSOPHY, MY FRIEND
WORK OUT YOUR PROBLEMS STEP BY STEP
AND YOU’LL FEEL BETTER IN THE END
DON’T LOSE HEART WHEN THE GOING GETS ROUGH
YOU’RE MADE OF BETTER THINGS
DON’T GIVE IN WHEN LIFE GETS TOUGH
STICK IT OUT
STAND FIRM AND SEE IT THROUGH
RIDE IT OUT
BE SURPRISED WHAT YOU CAN DO
STAND YOUR GROUND
NEVER GIVE IN
DON’T LOSE HEART AND YOU WILL WIN
REMEMBER DANIEL AND THE LION
(FROM THE OLD TESTAMENT)
REMEMBER DAVID AND HIS SLING
(WHO KILLED GOLIATH THE GIANT)
IF YOU CAN TAKE SOME STRENGTH FROM THEM
YOU’LL WIN ALMOST ANYTHING
IF YOU THINK LIFE CAN’T GET WORSE
THEN THERE IS ALWAYS SOMEONE WORSE THAN YOU
IF YOU THINK OUT YOUR PROBLEM STAGE BY STAGE
THERE’S ALWAYS SOMETHING YOU CAN DO
SO, DON’T LOSE HEART... etc. (Repeat chorus)
TRY NOT TO LIE THERE AND WORRY
TRY TO THINK MORE POSITIVELY
IT’S DIFFICULT WE KNOW
WHEN EV’RYTHING GOES WRONG
BUT TRY TO LOOK ON THE BRIGHT SIDE
SO, DON’T LOSE HEART.... etc. (Repeat chorus)
(Last line) SO, DON’T LOSE HEART
(Song ends)
